Mike was born in Bebington, England near
Liverpool and now makes his home in Massachusetts.
He loves sailing among the islands, bays
and coves of mid-coast Maine, which is the
inspiration for much of his recent work.
Art has been a lifelong passion for Mike,
but it is only in the past 3 years that
he has been able to pursue his vocation
full time after retiring from his 30-year
career as a software engineer. As a student
and young man he made many sketches that
he kept as a personal record of his travels.
During one of these journeys he met a young
Israeli woman who he later married. In the
late 1970's he developed ideas collected
in notebooks into larger charcoal drawings
in his studio in Gedera, Israel.
Describing his work as expressionist in
style, he sketches from his sailboat and
later develops these ideas on canvas in
the studio. Other artists who have influenced
his perception include Picasso, Cezanne,
Van Gogh, Marsden Hartley and Fairfield
Porter.
Mike's work has been featured in many juried
shows, including those of the Newburyport
and Concord Art Associations, and a solo
exhibition titled "Eye of a Sailor"
in 2005.
