Marc
Awodey is a Michigan native who now makes
his home in Burlington, Vermont. His father
was one of the architects who designed the
World Trade Center with Minoru Yamasaki. He
received an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook
Academy of Art in 1984, where he studied under
George Ortman. Awodey has been art critic
for the Vermont alternative weekly Seven Days
since 1997, and is employed in adjunct faculty
positions at The Community College of Vermont
and Burlington College.
Primarily a painter in oils, Awodey's work
is expressionistic in nature; his paintings,
like the work of the Fauvists of the early
20th century, are often punctuated by dramatic,
even violent, bursts of color that express
feelings and emotions. Awodey is also a published
poet and musician; from 1998 - 2001, he was
involved in a conceptual art project of 15
"Poetry Vending Machine Installations"
in New England and New York.
When pressed to articulate an Artist Statement,
he insists that "My statement IS the
work." His paintings are in many private
collections as well as the permanent collections
of the Vermont State House, the City of Burlington,
the Fleming Museum - University of Vermont,
and Burlington College.
